In 1200, he set sail for Ireland on his first visit as Lord of Leinster -but threatened with shipwreck on the crossing he vowed to found an abbey wherever he could land safely. The abbey was built in Wexford in the style of the Cistercians and it is this style that features in the design of this magnificent centrepiece. The great arched windows that flooded the abbey with natural light are recreated through the use of intricate linear and diamond cutting with the sun's rays radiating from the apex of each one.
